Watch the Night Sky – Prime Time for Meteor Showers

The prime meteor-viewing time on Hornby Island in August 2026 will be:

Wednesday night, August 12, into Thursday morning, August 13

The Perseid meteor shower reaches its predicted maximum at about 7:53 a.m. Pacific time on August 13—after daylight begins—so Hornby’s best practical viewing window is immediately beforehand.

Best viewing: approximately 1:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 13
Very best: roughly 2:30 a.m. to 4:15 a.m.

The night should be especially favourable because August 12 is a new moon, meaning virtually no moonlight will interfere.

You can begin watching around 10:30 or 11:00 p.m. on August 12, but meteor numbers should increase steadily after midnight as the Perseid radiant rises higher. Under genuinely dark, clear conditions, estimates range from roughly 50 to 100 meteors per hour at peak, although the number any one person actually sees will usually be lower.

For Hornby:

• Choose a broad, dark location with minimal trees and house lights.
• Look generally northeast, but keep your view wide—the meteors can appear anywhere overhead.
• Allow 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adjust.
• No binoculars or telescope are needed.
• By around 5:00 a.m., morning twilight will increasingly wash out the fainter meteors; sunrise is approximately 6:06 a.m.

The mornings of August 12 and August 14 should also be worthwhile backups, but the early morning of August 13 is the standout opportunity.
