Karen Elder came to Hornby Island for the first time in the mid-90s. Upon stepping foot on this litte island she fell in love and her dream has been to move here and paint since that time. That dream came true in 2010 when she moved here full-time. She is now free to do what her passion has been forever – Painting!

Throughout her life, Karen has painted, starting with watercolour landscapes in Burnaby and showing at various local shows there and in Prince Rupert where she lived for 3 years. She won the honour of being selected from a juried art show in the Pacific Northwest to participate in the BC Festival of Arts in Chilliwack in 1989. Karen also started painting with acrylics and oils during the last six years and has been a part of the Hornby Island Art culture almost since moving here. All through her life she has taken courses and workshops with many other talented artists up and down the coast but she would describe herself mainly as a self-taught artist.

Karen paints from the heart using oils, acrylics and watercolours. Her love of nature is apparent in her paintings whether they are landscapes, seascapes, trees, animals or flowers.
