Jennifer Armstrong is a Hornby Island photographer with a warm heart, an adventurous spirit and an instinct for finding the joy in everyday life. Her photography reflects much of Jennifer herself – open, playful, generous and genuinely interested in people. She has a knack for putting people at ease and catching the moments in between: the laughter, affection, movement and wonderfully unexpected bits of real life that might otherwise slip by.
Specializing in creative, candid documentary photography, Jennifer photographs families, weddings, celebrations and adventures, but her camera has also become part of the fabric of Hornby life. Through her long association with the Hornby Festival, she has captured extraordinary performers as well as audiences, volunteers, children, friends and all the spontaneous activity that happens around the music. Taken together, her photographs have become a wonderful visual record of years of summer life on the island.
Jennifer is equally at home with a camera in the forest. An active member of the Hornby Island Mountain Bike Association (HIMBA), she has photographed races and events including the Hornby Enduro, capturing riders hurtling through the woods along with the camaraderie and sheer fun surrounding them.
Her connection to Hornby and the outdoors runs through other parts of her life as well. Jennifer began practicing yoga on the island more than 30 years ago and has taught classes and retreats here for many years. Whether on a bike trail, in a meadow, behind a camera or lending a hand in the community, she approaches life with curiosity, humour and an appreciation for being part of it.
That spirit comes through in her photographs. Jennifer has an eye for connection, character, beauty and fun – the things that make a family, a gathering or an island memorable. Her work is ultimately a celebration of people and place, and of making the most of the life happening right in front of us.
