Chris Morejohn

Chris Morejohn is an artist, internationally recognized boat designer and builder whose lifelong connection with the sea runs through both his sculpture and his remarkably varied career. Best known locally for his sculptural fish, Chris brings to his work the close observation of someone who has spent decades sailing, diving, fishing and designing boats.

Chris lived and worked for many years in the Bahamas, where his fish sculptures were exhibited, sold and collected throughout the islands and beyond. His remarkably lifelike fish grew from decades spent observing the marine world at close range. Working primarily in wood, he combines carving, colour, pattern and texture with an intimate knowledge of the shape, movement and character of individual species.

His creative practice extends well beyond sculpture. Chris has an international reputation as a boat designer and builder, particularly for innovative sailing and shallow-water designs. His boats and plans have been built and used in many parts of the world. Now on Hornby, Chris continues to make his distinctive fish and is a familiar presence at the Hornby Island Farmers’ Market.
