DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 \nOur Fall Fair includes lots of fun activities like the Zucchini race; Market stalls\, beautiful Baskets for auction\, home-grown music\, tasty harvest food and a fabulous Parade. But the essential ingredient is the Competition Tent – where island growers and makers display the fruits of their gardens\, farms and kitchens. Food security and sustainability is crucial for our island and the Fair remains centred on celebrating and sharing information and skills so we can all up our game in food self-sufficiency. DESCRIPTION:Our Fall Fair includes lots of fun activities like the Zucchini race; Market stalls\, beautiful Baskets for auction\, home-grown music\, tasty harvest food and a fabulous Parade. But the essential ingredient is the Competition Tent – where island growers and makers display the fruits of their gardens\, farms and kitchens. Food security and sustainability is crucial for our island and the Fair remains centred on celebrating and sharing information and skills so we can all up our game in food self-sufficiency. Check out the competition categories and standards and get ready to share your work. \nThe Zucchini races are just around the corner and we are looking for some volunteers to help pull it off this year. So if you’ve got a desire to be part of making the spectacle that is the Zucchinigedon at the fall fair then please get a hold of me and we can get to making some quality memories for the little ones  Also we are in need of some help for the Saturday Racer building Workshop at the Spark and extra Zucchinis will always get used!

SUMMARY:The Festival: Dear Rouge
DESCRIPTION:For over 10 years now\, Dear Rouge\, the alternative rock duo of Drew and Danielle McTaggart\, have been winning over fans consistently and hitting new career heights. Following their major label debut record\, 2015’s Black To Gold\, the couple picked up multiple Top 10 radio hits\, the 2015 SOCAN Songwriting Prize and the 2016 Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year. Dear Rouge continued their upward trajectory with their 2018 sophomore album PHASES which included the lead single “Boys and Blondes” and the #1 Alternative Rock hit\, “Live Through The Night.” Along the way\, they opened for artists like Phantogram\, Arkells\, Our Lady Peace\, and Lights\, and also wowed crowds on major festival stages from coast to coast with their energetic and dynamic live performances. \nThe band has continued to solidify their presence in the Canadian music landscape with their third full-length record\, Spirit\, released April 8\, 2022. The record spawned the #1 Alternative Rock hit “Fake Fame”\, and the album’s title track “Gimme Spirit” which broke the Top 10 on Alternative Rock over summer 2022. The band picked up an Indie Award for Group of the Year at Canadian Music Week\, before a packed summer of festivals that included two high-profile shows opening for Vance Joy and a tour supporting Canadian legends\, Metric. Dear Rouge’s most recent single “Meet Me At The Rio” broke the Top 10 ahead of their headlining Spirit Tour over winter 2022. The Spirit Tour saw sold out shows in St. Catharines\, Toronto\, Red Deer\, and Victoria before the band capped off the year with a packed headlining show at the historic Vogue Theatre in their hometown of Vancouver. DESCRIPTION:Ndidi Onukwulu\, known as Ndidi O\, is a two time Juno-nominated and WCMA blues artist of the year.  She has to date released five albums under her solo moniker and multiple singles as part of her trip hop duo BOGA. She has toured nationally and internationally playing festivals and concert halls. Her songs have been featured in numerous television programs and commercial campaigns such as for  GAP\, Orange is the New Black\, CW’s The Flash\, Hulu’s Cloak & Dagger and most recently Netflix’s “Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madame C.J Walker” starring Octavia Spencer. Hailing from the wilds of British Columbia\, she found her voice in the “open mic” scene in New York\, discovered her sound in the heart of Toronto’s blues and folk scene\, fine-tuned her live show across Europe and has now finally settled\, for the moment\, back on the West Coast. Ndidi O is working on new musical offerings from her solo project \, her trip hop duo BOGA and her upcoming collaboration\, The Blue And Gold\, with  multi-instrumental singer-songwriter Trish Klein. SUMMARY:The Festival: LyricaFest Trio
DESCRIPTION:The LyricaFest Trio was formed in 2018 as the partnering ensemble of the Citizen’s Artist Orchestra. Sir Elton John has praised the musicians of the trio’s playing as “inspired and beautiful.” Performances have taken its members to Carnegie Hall\, the Shalini Liu Center\, Jordan Hall and the Kennedy Center; the trio is also prize winners in both national and international competitions. A 2022 recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Grant\, this spring the trio joins with Project Step to bring chamber music coaching to underserved youth. The LyricaFest Trio was recently named Ensemble in Residence at the Arts Ahimsa Music Festival and Boston Medical’s Healthcare for the Homeless Program. The Fest Trio created the Music Gram Project which provides collaborative work for musicians and visual artists in dire need\, often struggling with substance abuse and mental wellness. They have received endorsements from Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company\, Merrill Lynch\, and their community in Lincoln\, MA where their members reside. SUMMARY:The Festival: Five Alarm Funk
DESCRIPTION:Five Alarm Funk is a horn-powered\, percussion-fueled sonic and visual assault. With over 17 years of hard funking\, the band has burned up stages on four continents\, released six studio albums and received two Juno Award nominations. And this ride isn’t about to slow down! Five Alarm Funk just released their seventh studio album\, Big Smoke\, featuring epic\, intense arrangements\, a heavy groove\, and a tonne of fun. As drummer\, vocalist\, and band leader\, Tayo Branston\, puts it\, “Big Smoke is the tightest\, funkiest\, and most energized album we’ve ever created; it’s the culmination of 17 years of creating\, recording and performing together. We call it Punk Funk–it’s got the punch of heavy hitting dance music with the energy of a ruckus live concert.” For all the honing of their studio craft\, the Five Alarm Funk’s epic live show is still what defines the band. The sweat-drenched concerts are infused with an intense spirit of fun that breaks down barriers between band and audience and moves both into a manic dance party. DESCRIPTION:Back by overwhelming popular demand\, after igniting our stage last year to an enthusiastic\, all-ages audience\, we are excited for the return of Juno-nominee and two-time Western Canadian music award nominee\, recording artist Rian Peters\, better known by his stage name IAMTHELIVING. Rian hails from London\, United Kingdom but now calls Vancouver\, BC his home. \nRian has toured and performed with the likes of Estelle\, Ceelo Green and has also opened for Lauryn Hill at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Rian’s debut EP  ‘In This Thing Called Life’ was recognized by the JUNO awards with a 2021 nomination in the “Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year” category. Rian was also nominated for “R&B artist of the Year” at the Western Canadian Music Awards in 2021 and in 2020. \nRian’s international perspective and wealth of life experiences shine through in his musical output–a fast-growing collection of richly written\, vibrant songs that emanate authentic emotion. His songwriting is focused and poised\, and it emanates intentionality. He is a multi-faceted artist committed to advancing his craft\, while always remaining heartfelt and genuine. SUMMARY:The Festival: Isidore String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022\, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed with a vision to revisit\, rediscover\, and reinvigorate the repertoire. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were new\, and the new as if it were firmly established.’ \n  \nThe members of the quartet are violinists Adrian Steele and Phoenix Avalon\, violist Devin Moore\, and cellist Joshua McClendon. The four began as an ensemble at the Juilliard School in 2019. Their Banff-triumphant win brings extensive tours of North America and Europe\, a two-year appointment as the Peak Fellowship Ensemble-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University in Dallas\, performances at Haydn Hall in Eisenstadt and the Lucerne Festival. The Isidore String Quartet cultivates joyful\, accessible\, and intimate experiences that create community through in-depth relationships and explore the power of the collective to uplift the individual. The gloriously vital tradition of the string quartet is our playground to impact the world we live in and inspire others through the art of collaboration and play. SUMMARY:The Festival: OKAN (Dance/World/Afro-Cuban)
DESCRIPTION:OKAN follows up on their Juno-nominated and Independent Music Award-winning debut album Sombras\, with their 2021 JUNO Award-winning album Espiral\, taking the prize for World Music Album of the Year. OKAN\, is a women-led ensemble that fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz\, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration\, courage and love. Blending traditional Cuban music\, jazz\, and contemporary Afro-Cuban sounds\, OKAN embraces every culture and welcomes it as its own. OKAN has  great sophistication in their music which showcases the evolution of Cuban music outside of Cuba. \nLead vocalist in OKAN\, Elizabeth Rodriguez\, born in Havana\, is a violinist and was a Concertmaster of the Havana Youth Orchestra. Since moving to Canada in 2013\, Rodriguez has been pursuing her musical career as a singer and violinist for several bands including the Juno-winning band of Jane Bunnett & Maqueque and The Battle of Santiago. \nDrummer/percussionist Magdelys Savigne was born in Santiago de Cuba and is an award-winning percussionist\, vocalist and composer.  Savigne is also a member of Maqueque and the Battle of Santiago\, as well as Bill King’s Rhythm Express. As renowned soloists in their own right\, they combine their individual careers and backgrounds into a deeply profound soul. \nRodriguez and Savigne will be joined by a formidable rhythm section\,  Frank Martinez Nodarse on drums\, Roberto Riveron on bass\, and Jeremy Ledbetter on keys. \nOpening Act – Jeff Rabena \n\n\nTICKETS: Tickets are available for pre-order online here or at the entrance to the festival.

DESCRIPTION:Come down to beautiful Rosemuir Farm for the launch of the 2023 Hornby Festival. \nElder Barb Whyte (Billy)\, knowledge keeper and member of the K’ómoks Nation\, will open the festival with a traditional Pentlatch Welcome Ceremony. We will introduce you to our Indigenous Artists in Residence who will be working and running workshops at the Hornby Community Hall throughout the festival. \nBeverages and small finger food appetizers will be served at this event. The ticket holders will be allowed to stay on for the evening performance\, and other patrons can choose to purchase a ticket for the evening event at that point. \n\n\n\n\n
